My Dog Speaks

I was invited by Hiro Sakaguchi to participate in My Dog Speaks: An Animal Narrative in Contemporary Art.  The opening was this past Saturday, and the work was fantastic and varied.  It will be on view at Seraphin Gallery through June 9th, so if you're in the area, I would definitely recommend checking it out.  Their website also has great images of all of the work in the show.  Here's my contribution:

Seraphin Gallery is proud to announce My Dog Speaks; An Animal Narrative in Contemporary Art, curated by Seraphin artist Hiro Sakaguchi. Twelve emerging and established artists will participate in this group exhibition in which animals play the central role. This will include a variety of mediums such as paintings, drawings, and sculpture.

Artists Sarah McEneaney and Laura McKinley use animals in their stylized paintings in which their respective creatures take part in the nostalgic and kitsch routine of daily life. This differs widely from the airy and light work of Sherif Habashi who uses zebras as a decorative element in his painting. Eric McDade and Bonnie Brenda Scott work with playful and cultural associations, differing from the zoological approach of artist Caitlin Emma Perkins. Artists Anne Canfield, Caroline Picard, John Karpinski, Alina Josan and Amanda Miller transform animals to fit into a fantastical fiction while artists Darla Jackson and Nancy Sophy work with broad symbolism as represented by their select creature.
Through each work, these artists view, interact, and imagine animals in their own setting, highlighting the ever apparent bond between humans and their four legged, and at times, two legged friends.

Seraphin Gallery showcases My Dog Speaks from May 9th – June 9th, 2009. Artists featured in this exhibit have showcased in the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania, the Museum of American Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Weatherspoon Art Museum. Seraphin Gallery artist and curator Hiro Sakaguchi has curated “Picture Journal Project” as part of curator Sean Stoops’ exhibit “Subterranean”, “Useless Weapon” at Green Lantern in Chicago, and has lectured at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

itsy bitsy

The Other Woman's next great, big show of teeny, tiny art at Arcadia is quickly approaching!!!  I am super psyched about all of the work that will be in this show, and I think you will be, too.  Please see below for all of the details... and I promise that the opening will be banging.  Sneak peek coming soon!

Petits Fours: A Show of Miniatures, is an exhibition of new artwork by the members of The Other Woman (a ladies art collective) which opens at Arcadia Boutique on April 5th. Each member has challenged themselves to adapt their art-making processes to produce new bodies of Lilliputian works ranging from pocket- to pint-sized.  As in the past, the artists create work in distinctly different media, but common themes and sensibilities tie the art together in a way that enriches the viewer's experience of each individuals' work.

Aubrie Costello’s miniatures combine to make a little world of theatrics. The patrons head to their seats, the stage is set, and the performers anxiously await their cue in their little niches. Together, all get ready for the big show.

Laura Graham explores object identification and identity in her newest collection of work, Identity Exercise. Each image is exposed onto japaned tin plates through the wet plate process.

Darla Jackson has created multiple rooms of a miniature house, where animals have taken over, yet still aren’t quite sure what it is they want to do with what they’ve gotten. Dark, yet ridiculous, this scenerio shows creatures who are determined to understand what it is that sets them apart from humans as they investigate their ill-gotten gains.

After a recent trip to an island paradise and a timely reading of Sister Carrie, Laura McKinley found a way to cast off recurring memories and troubling thoughts.  In contrast to the tradition of bottling wishes, Laura has catalogued the thoughts that nag at her mind and weigh on her heart in a collection of postage-stamped sized pen and ink drawings, and then encapsulated them in a collection of miniature glass bottles.  Her subjects range from loved ones lost to difficult relationships to her own perceived shortcomings, and through these painstaking miniature drawings, she hopes to contain them and set them sailing away.

Petits Fours runs from April 5 through May 31, 2008 at Arcadia Boutique, located at 819 North 2nd Street in Philadelphia.  An artists' reception with refreshments will be held on Thursday, April 16th from 6:00-10:00pm.  Be sure to bring your glasses.

merry merry!

Just a quick note to let you know that I just uploaded some images of a drawing series I did in the fall.  The portraits were displayed alongside the quotes, but having only a scanner at my disposal I am not at this time able to show you them as they were intended to be seen, all framed up, side by side.  So, in the meantime, just match the names.

Work has begun for the spring The Other Woman show, and I can tell already that it's going to be our best yet.  More information to come, so please check back!

Bootylicious!

For those of you who don't already know, the fabulous Darla Jackson was commissioned by Moore College of Art to sculpt and cast giant boots to commemorate their 160th anniversary.  The boots were then given to artists to embellish/"decorate"/modify, and they will eventually be placed around the city.

The Other Woman was lucky enough to receive one of these boots, and our efforts will be on display at Moore for one night only (!) along with all of the other boots, before they are scattered to the far corners of Center City.  So please join us on October 22nd (the most magical day of the year) to celebrate this exciting occasion.

First Person Salons at the Gershman Y on Wednesday, February 13th!

I have been invited to participate in the inaugural evening of First Person Salons at the Gershman Y, located at 401 S. Broad Street in Philadelphia.  Please join me this Wednesday evening at 7:00pm.  I will be discussing my work in the context of memoir/documentary along with other artists who address similar themes in their work.  I was selected based on my participation in one of David Kessler's Studioscopic episodes (see press to watch the video).

Other artists who will be participating on Wednesday are Corey Armpriester, Nicole Dupree, David Kessler, Jenny Kanzler and Sharon Cole.  Please see my exhibitions and events page for more details on the event.  Please note, there is a small admission fee of $5-10.
